Sunny Halter

Have some fun creating this double layer creative top knitting pattern. Two layers are worked, one from the bottom up and one from the top down, joined at the neck and under arm seams. The outer layer is tunic length with a flared, fluted hem, halter neck front and racer back. The inner layer is worked in the round to below the bust with a short sleeve. Sizes suit 78-153 cm (30-60 inch) bust.

Choose two complimentary or contrasting colour yarns with a matching hem in an optional third colour just for fun. The inner layer is ideal to show off a favourite hand dyed, multi-coloured skein of yarn. Alternately, how about a slow gradient cake that graduates from one colour to the next as it works down from neck to sleeve? Pair this creative top with a below-knee pencil skirt, turtle neck, trilby hat and long chunky boots for an artistic look. Go casual with a long sleeved t-shirt, jeans and sneakers for the weekend. Head out for an evening theatre show with long sleeved mesh skivvy, wet look or satin pants, evening heels, hair up and a bold lipstick for a head turning, unique outfit.

What you’ll need

2 fingering weight yarns. Detailed yardage for each size is in the pattern.

• MC Outer layer 370-770 metres or 400-850 yards
• CC Inner layer 340-1000 metres or 370-1100 yards
• CC2 (Optional) 5-10 metres or yards of a DK weight contrast to both yarns for sleeve and body hem. If you are using one variegated yarn, pick one of its colours as a nice way to draw the whole picture together.

3.25mm (US size 3) needles on an 80-120cm (32-45″) circular cable for the body and on a 20-30cm (8-12″) circular cable for neck and sleeves
3.5mm (US size 4) needles on an 80-120cm (32-45″) circular cable for the outer layer hem
2.5mm (US size 1.5) needles on a 20-30cm (8-12″) circular cable OR 2.5mm double pointed needles or Addi CraSyTrio for collar and halter
Darning needle
Open lock stitch markers in a variety of colours
Sewing cotton in a contrast colour to MC
Sewing pins
Waste yarn in fingering weight for invisible cast on and to hold stitches not in use.
