Knitting Stitch Gauge Calculator

Check your gauge! It can make a massive difference to the outcome of your knitting project. Even when your gauge is just a few stitches different from the Designer’s gauge listed in the pattern, the garment could end up 2 or 3 dress sizes different from what you expect. Relax! It’s often possible to alter the number of stitches you work knitting in the round – or knitting back and forth – to compensate for the difference in gauge. Below, I’ve made a Knitting Stitch Gauge Calculator (scroll down) to help you with the math.

When you need to convert your stitch count

It’s really handy

  • when your knitting tension is different from the designer’s gauge and you don’t want to change needles
  • when you love the stitch pattern but prefer a yarn and needles of a different thickness. (Beware of this one as the design components may depend upon you working in the same weight as the knitwear Designer.)
  • to use as an audit when you’ve converted the knitting stitch count or row count but need to check the width and height measurements

Feel free to bookmark this Knitting Stitch Gauge Calculator page. I will look at doing a more detailed stitch count guide in the future. Then, you’ll be able to calculate, or do a gauge conversion, for a whole garment just like a Designer.

Tips

When you are changing to a new gauge

  • Circle all the stitch counts for your size all through the pattern, then use the margin to write your newly converted stitch count. Print the numbers very clearly to avoid misreading.
  • Regularly check the stitch count as you work to make sure the gauge has not changed again.
  • Write the new gauge next to the Designer’s gauge at the top of the pattern. This is handy when you’ve put your knitting down for a week or more. The reminder of what you have changed will help you get back up to speed.
