Just a quick post this time. When you knit or craft for many hours — and, hey, who wouldn’t want to? — it’s possible to end up with your neck feeling stiff and your shoulders inching their way up closer to your jawline. Slowly, the neck appears to get shorter, the double chin appears, the collar bone recedes and those triangle trapezium muscles at the back start to bulk up. Here are some really great exercises for a sore neck.
I’m using Dr Mandell’s “Motivational Doc” YouTube channel as I really like his clarity of explanation. The first video shows how you can massage along and across the muscles to add mobility. YES. Of course I have tried it. After the first day, I could feel the difference. After about the third day, I could literally see the difference and my neck started to look long again. It made me feel quite young! I like using these exercises in the evening after dinner when I stop to watch tutorials or catch up on the news.
The second Dr Mandell video is a shorter one which you can use whenever you need exercises for a sore neck during the day. They are more for maintenance.
I love how he covers a wide variety of movement. Your neck can offer an amazing variety of positions in how you can hold your head. When I was dancing, a flexible neck was critical. In classes, I don’t remember doing much to work on neck flexibility in an isolated way. Just a few minutes of exercises like in this video. Yet, when dancing, the neck was used in many different stances, different angles and movements. I guess we just took the neck for granted and the movements became part of the whole body workout.
As mentioned in the article about carpal tunnel and sore wrists, there are some excellent products recommended there which you can also use on your neck before you go to bed to assist with healing and relaxing.
After following these videos for a few days, you’ll be able to let out a big, “Ahhhhhhh”. So much better! ☺️
