7 Essential Tips To Avoid Scams When Shopping for Knitted Sweaters Online

Avoid fashion scams when buying online

In today’s online marketplace, finding the perfect knitted sweater shouldn’t feel like a gamble. With the ease of online shopping comes the risk of scams that can leave you cold and regretting your purchase. As cozy and colourful as that stranded yolk looks on your screen, it’s essential to ensure that your dream sweater isn’t too good to be true. By understanding the telltale signs of online scams and taking proactive steps to protect your wallet, you can shop with more confidence. In this guide, we’ll look at seven essential tips to help you navigate the virtual world of knitted sweater online stores, helping you to make informed choices and avoiding the pitfalls.

The Inspiration

One of my friends came to me with a truly awful tale. Her mother, who is in her early 80s, went online looking for a hand knitted sweater (in Australia we call them jerseys). She found a lovely design with a yolk and mixed, multi-coloured motifs all the way down the length. She loved the colour scheme and was impressed with the price of only $90.

What arrived was nothing at all like what was advertised (see below). My friend was really angry about it. She gave the garment to me (I can’t really call it a jersey) asking if I could write this article to help others avoid the same situation. It is disgusting. 100% polyester “Made in China”, it says on the tag. It is the cheapest material on the market. Just a basic sweatshirt pattern with a print on the surface that was probably a stolen photo of a jersey / sweater. It’s not warm. Polyester is, let’s face it, plastic. One of the lowest vibration fabrics you can wear. Just look at it…

My friend tried to convince her mother to send it back and demand a refund. Her credit card company would be able to freeze the payment until the dispute was sorted and, if it wasn’t addressed by the seller, then the card company would be able to block the merchant account. However, her mother was too upset and didn’t want the bother of it all.

How many others have felt the same? Nothing is done. The seller keeps the $90 (It would hardly be worth friggin’ $5 to make) and yet another buyer will make the same mistake. Let’s hope her credit card details are safe.

Recently, I’ve also seen a mammoth amount of fake sites promoting their knitted sweaters on Facebook. I’ll detail a couple of them a bit later. Honestly, they are not hard to find.

So, here are seven tips to help you sort the genuine sellers from the scammers.

1 – Researching the Seller: What to Look For

Before making any purchase, especially from an online store, it’s vital to research the seller thoroughly. Start by checking the website’s domain. Reputable businesses often use domains that reflect their brand name and are not hosted on free or suspicious platforms. Look for information about the company, such as its physical address, contact number, and customer service details. A legitimate business will typically provide clear and accessible information.

Next, assess the seller’s online presence. Established businesses often maintain active profiles on social media, where they engage with customers, post updates, and showcase their products. A lack of social media presence or a dormant account can be a warning sign. By taking the time to research the seller, you can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to scams and ensure a more secure shopping experience.

2 – Identifying Red Flags in Product Listings

When shopping for knitted sweaters online, it’s crucial to scrutinise product listings carefully. One of the first things to look out for is the quality of the images. Scammers often use stock photos or images stolen from legitimate websites. If the pictures appear too polished or you see the same image on multiple sites, it could be a sign that the listing is not genuine. Always look for original photos that show the product from different angles and in various lighting conditions.

Sample scam:

Here below is an image that came up on my Facebook feed as I was writing this article. You can see in the advert, all images are stuck together in one montage. When you click anywhere in the image, it goes through to the website. Let’s break the montage down.

Scam online fashion outlets
The first image is of a group of people all wearing Nordic yolk sweaters (plus one cardigan). I used https://www.bing.com/visualsearch?cc=us which does a reverse search on the image. It brought up the following webpage. Scroll down to “3. Islandia” and you will see where they stole the image from.

Check their Business Page

Being on Facebook, the seller must have their own business page. Let’s take a look at it.

Fake online stores, how to spot a scam

Here, you can see they set up the page a few months ago with a very general image as the banner. This allows them to sell a number of different types of products to avoid suspicion. (UPDATE – I see they are selling shoes now.)

There aren’t many likes nor followers. They usually set up fake accounts so they can like themselves. You can sometimes find these stores actually have quite a few likes and followers supplied by phone farms which might even provide reactions and comments. However, you will be able to see the follower comments don’t always communicate together like humans and often have the same generic styled answers.

Most genuine vendors will also update their page more often that this one shown. I admit, I don’t update mine that often but, if I were a clothing vendor, I would at least have images of my products on the page.

Look for the duplicates

Next, let’s look on their website at the products they pretend to sell.

Scam online fashion vendor

For some weird reason, the scammers often use this same model and stance over and over, as if no one else models knitted sweaters. My guess is that these images are from the very popular knitting pattern designer Isabell Kraemer.

She is very slim and usually models her sweaters paired with stressed jeans. Here’s one of her products modelled in a similar stance with the jeans.

Look closely at those stitches!

Next, take a look at the products close up in the same image above. Does the sweater fold in the same place? Are the hands the same? They can use photoshop to adjust the colour scheme from the original photo or paste a different pattern over the top. What I sometimes find amusing is how some of the editing just cannot add a yolk pattern that fits around a sleeve or a 3 dimensional body. Whoever is editing the photo, doesn’t know how a sweater is constructed. They just don’t have time to make the stitch pattern fit around the body properly so, they rely on buyers not knowing what to look for. Look at the stripes on the second image in the top row. Sloppy work on the right shoulder! haha

Read the details

Another red flag to watch for is the product description. Legitimate sellers provide detailed and accurate descriptions of their products, including information about the material, size, care instructions, and origin. Be wary of listings with vague or overly generic descriptions. Poor grammar, spelling mistakes, and inconsistent information are often indicators of a scam. Additionally, check if the listing provides a clear and straightforward sizing chart; this is particularly important for clothing items like knitted sweaters.

Scammer fraud fashion knitwear online stores

In this example, skullmoda dot com, all the images are A.I. Pretty cool images but not real. You can see the top of the coat hanger is missing. The backgrounds always look like they are out of a Pixar animation, too consistent, flat lighting, not real. There is no description.

Notice the Material quietly says “Terylene”. What is Terylene?  You guessed it… polyester plastic. So the image you see here is nothing like the garment that will be shipped to you. Do they consider themselves “honest” because they told you it was made of Terylene?

3 – The Importance of Customer Reviews and Ratings

Customer reviews and ratings play a crucial role in determining the reliability of an online seller. They provide firsthand accounts of other buyers’ experiences, offering valuable insights into the quality of the product and the seller’s customer service. However, not all reviews are created equal. It’s essential to discern genuine reviews from fake ones, which are often used by scammers to build a false sense of trust.

Start by reading a mix of positive and negative reviews. Genuine reviews are usually balanced, mentioning both the pros and cons of the product. Be wary of listings with an overwhelming number of positive reviews that seem overly enthusiastic or too perfect. Such reviews might be fabricated. On the other hand, a pattern of negative reviews, especially those mentioning issues like non-delivery, poor quality, or unresponsive customer service, should be taken seriously.

Additionally, check the dates of the reviews. A sudden influx of reviews within a short period can be a sign of manipulation. Look for reviews that span a reasonable time frame, indicating a consistent level of service and product quality. Also, consider the reviewer’s profile. Genuine reviewers often have a history of varied feedback on different products, while fake reviewers might have a limited or suspiciously similar review history. By paying attention to these details, you can make more informed decisions and avoid falling victim to scams.

4 – Secure Payment Methods: How to Protect Your Information

When shopping online, choosing the right payment method is crucial for protecting your financial information. Secure payment options include credit cards, PayPal, Stripe and other trusted payment gateways. These methods offer buyer protection features that can help you recover your money in case of fraud. Avoid using direct bank transfers, wire services, or prepaid cards, as these offer little to no recourse if something goes wrong.

Before entering your payment details, ensure that the website is secure. Look for a URL that starts with “https://” and displays a padlock symbol in the address bar. These indicators mean that the site uses encryption to protect your data. Additionally, consider using a virtual credit card or a payment service that generates a temporary card number for online transactions. This adds an extra layer of security by keeping your actual card number hidden.

It’s also important to monitor your financial statements regularly for any unauthorised transactions. Set up alerts with your bank or credit card provider to receive notifications of any suspicious activity. If you do notice something amiss, report it immediately. Taking these precautions can help you safeguard your personal and financial information, making your online shopping experience much safer.

5 – Checking Return Policies and Guarantees

A clear and fair return policy is a hallmark of a reputable online seller of physical products. Before making a purchase, take the time to read and understand the seller’s return policy. Look for information on how long you have to return an item, the condition it must be in, and who is responsible for return shipping costs. A transparent return policy not only indicates the seller’s confidence in their product but also provides you with peace of mind.

Pay attention to any conditions that might void the return policy, such as final sale items or those that cannot be returned once they are worn or washed. Some sellers also offer satisfaction guarantees, promising a refund or exchange if you’re not happy with your purchase for any reason. This is a good sign that the seller stands behind their products and values customer satisfaction.

6 – Using Social Media to Verify Sellers

Social media can be a powerful tool for verifying the authenticity of online sellers. Many reputable businesses maintain active profiles on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, where they engage with customers, showcase their products, and provide updates. A well-maintained social media presence can indicate that the seller is legitimate and committed to building a community around their brand.

Start by checking the seller’s social media profiles for consistency. Look for regular posts, customer interactions, and a professional presentation. Genuine businesses often share customer reviews, behind-the-scenes content, and user-generated posts featuring their products. These elements can provide additional insights into the seller’s reliability and the quality of their merchandise. Be cautious of sellers with sparse or inactive profiles, as this can be a sign of a less trustworthy operation.

Additionally, social media can be an excellent platform for gathering feedback from other customers. Look for comments and reviews on the seller’s posts to see how they handle customer inquiries and complaints. A seller that actively engages with their audience and addresses concerns promptly is likely to be more reliable. If you still have doubts, consider reaching out to the seller directly through their social media channels. A prompt and professional response can further verify their legitimacy and help you make an informed decision.

7 – Comparing Prices: Spotting Too-Good-To-Be-True Deals

While everyone loves a good deal, it’s essential to approach unusually low prices with caution. Scammers often use rock-bottom prices to attract buyers quickly, only to deliver subpar products or nothing at all. When shopping for knitted sweaters online, take the time to compare prices across different sellers and platforms. This can help you determine a reasonable price range for the item you’re interested in.

One strategy is to look for similar products from well-known and reputable brands. This can give you a benchmark for what a fair price should be. If a listing is significantly cheaper than the average, it might be too good to be true. Remember, quality knitted sweaters require time, skill, and high-quality materials to produce, so extremely low prices are often a red flag.

Also, consider the seller’s location. Items from overseas sellers might be cheaper due to lower production costs, but they can also come with longer shipping times and potential customs fees. Be wary of sellers who don’t disclose their location or provide vague information about their operations. By comparing prices and considering all the factors involved, you can avoid falling for deals that are too good to be true and make more informed purchasing decisions.

When to Report Suspicious Activity

Even with the best precautions, you might still encounter suspicious activity when shopping online. Knowing when and how to report such activity can help protect you and others from falling victim to scams. If you come across a seller that appears fraudulent, start by gathering as much information as possible. This includes screenshots of the website, product listings, emails, and any other relevant communication.

Report the suspicious activity to the platform where you encountered the seller. Most e-commerce sites and social media platforms have mechanisms for reporting fraudulent behaviour. Provide them with all the information you’ve collected to help them investigate the issue. Additionally, consider filing a complaint with consumer protection agencies, such as the Better Business Bureau, Australian Office of Fair Trading or your local consumer protection office. These organisations can take further action and help prevent others from being scammed.

If you’ve already made a purchase and believe you’ve been scammed, contact your bank or credit card provider immediately to dispute the charges. They can often reverse the transaction and investigate the matter further. By taking swift action and reporting suspicious activity, you not only protect yourself but also contribute to a safer online shopping environment for everyone.
